Cutecumber's wife, Mango, reached out to me ages ago about commissioning this plush as a gift for their anniversary. I loved the character, so wanted to take it on! But since their anniversary was in November we held off for a while. And now, it was finally time to make her! I love her theme and thought it'd translate well to plush! This is Cutecumber's main ref, and the one I was sent originally. When discussing specifics and minky colors, a new ref ended up getting made: This new reference reminded me a lot of my short legged, round tummy anthro pattern. So I drew up a sketch, which Cutecumber drew over: With a concept solidified, I could start the applique! I was so happy they wanted mochi paw pads, because I was super excited to see what they look like on my anthro plush! They just look so soft and I love the color combo here, especially in this light 🤩 Body applique! The first couple eye tests. My client requested all black eyes, and a different style from the sketch. The top was more true to the sketch provided, and the bottom I enlarged the eyes to give it a more chibi/plush feel. We ended up going with the bottom style! All the applique! I'd need to pattern the tail with the plush partially completed, so I went ahead and started sewing. For the neck ruff, I had an idea to use luxe cuddle minky. I found this fabric that was very close, but not quite matching the mint minky (the light green). It was close enough, and we thought it'd be very cute, so we went with it! And it turned out super cute! Once again, the head came out too small. I'm not sure why my heads are always the wrong size on the first try despite having a standard pattern! Sigh. But, I went ahead and patterned the hair and ear shapes. The tail was a 4 piece pattern for a ball, essentially. Time to redo the head, and make the final tail! I was LITERALLY ON THE LAST OF THE APPLIQUE for this color, and ran out of thread. I'm always shocked at how little thread there is on these little Gutterman spools. LUCKILY, I had a different thread that was virtually identical and I didn't need to make a trip to the store (but why did I buy this new thread in the first place?? Sigh 🤦♀️) The tail sewn together and pinned on, with a few leaves too! Needed to make more for the base. Since I'm obsessed with mochi minky, I wanted to use some for the inner ears as I really like the subtle texture difference it provides. Luckily my Joann's has started stocking new colors of mochi minky (which I had a horrible experience buying) and ivory was one of them. It matches Shannon ivory perfectly! And I had some matching faux fur for ear tufts. Ears sewn to the new head! The larger head fits the overall round, chibi style of the plush better! After I sewed it together, I had some further adjustments I wanted to make:
Everything was sewn together. Her tail and head were machine sewn on, but all of her hair, her nose, and leaves were hand stitched on. She also had magnets attached to her hands and plastic armature in her arms. Her head looks much better! Testing her movement - and she looks so mischievous with her hands together! After a day of hand sewing, she was complete! You can watch her showcase video below, and her image gallery below that!
